There are a wide variety of pizzas available throughout the world. The USA is the best example of a country in which pizza was introduced in several parts of the country at the same time by immigrants from different parts of the world. The most famous of the regional varieties available in America is the New York pizza.

As the name suggests the New-York style pizza originated in New York City. Pizza was not sold in New York before the early 1900s. New York pizza is always made with a thin base, which is handmade. The crust is crispy and has a distinct flavour. It is said that the minerals in New York water are what gives the crust its unique taste. The only ingredients used in the crust dough are flour (high-gluten), water, yeast and salt.

A New York pizza is 18 inches in diameter and is cut into 8 slices. You can buy the whole pie or just a slice. It is normally served with dried red chilli, garlic powder or oregano. Traditionally, only mozzarella is used on a New York pizza.

The other variation on a New York pizza, which is popular in the city, is called the Sicilian. It is made of thicker dough and is usually served in squares. Strangely, the Sicilian pizza is not at all like the pizzas that are actually made in Sicily.

The traditional New York pizza is now also popular in most of the North-eastern states. Outside of New York, it is sometimes referred to as an Italian pizza. Many pizza chains have New York pizza on their menus, but because they do not have wood ovens these pizzas are poor imitations of the real New York pizza. The crust does not get crispy enough, because the oven does not get hot enough. Pizza chains also tend to use chilled tomato sauce instead of sauce which is at room temperature, this results in a soggy base.
