Organic food is food that has been grown adhering to specific standards. There is evidence that such food is more nutritious and healthier to eat than food grown conventionally.
Among the standards for organic food is that synthetic pesticides may not be used. Some plant-based pesticides are acceptable, but still only on a restricted basis and as a last resort. Organic foods also do not contain artificial additives or preservatives. They generally do not use chemicals as ripening agents, nor do they contain irradiated food or genetically modified food.
There are different terms used to let you know just how organic the particular food is that you are considering buying. If it is 100% organic, that is exactly how it will be labeled. If the product just says organic, than it is at least 95% so. If the food has between 70% and 95%, it can be labeled made with organic ingredients.
Many believe that organic farming is better for the environment because there are no synthetic pesticides to damage the soil, water and animals in the surrounding area. These farms actually benefit the ecosystem, often relying on insects and birds to rid the farm of harmful pests. They produce fewer waste products and consume less energy than conventional farms.
Some research argues that organic farms do not produce as much per acre as conventional ones. However, other research indicates that this is not true throughout the world. Developed countries may produce less farming organically but developing countries produce more. If organic farming were used across the globe, the overall yield would be at least as much, if not more.
Though there is some conflicting evidence, there are definitely studies that prove soil farmed organically has more nutrients and therefore yields more nutritious foods. Part of this is the fact that no chemicals are used. Another factor is that organic farming normally uses the method of crop rotation which has been used throughout history to improve soil quality.
Food grown conventionally does not have the same nutrition that it once did. Food grown today, by whatever method, has less than the same item grown a century ago. But there are studies showing that organically grown food has more nutrition than the same food grown by conventional methods. In addition, even after washing, produce grown conventionally still contains chemicals.
The controversy over whether or not organic food is healthier will likely continue. From a logic standpoint, however, it is hard to argue that pesticides in food, of any amount, is healthy. When you factor in the hormones in conventionally raised meat on top of that, the argument for eating organic food gets more and more compelling.
Ever pondered – what is organic food ? organic food is food that has been grown complying to specific standards. There is evidence that such food is a lot more nutritious and healthier to eat than food grown conventionally.
