Saving Money When You Go Grocery Shopping

In the United States, it’s entirely likely that you spend just as much on food every month as you do on your rent or your house payment, but it doesn’t have to be that way if you pay attention to a few simple tips. Grocery shopping can be made cheap again, but it may take a little effort on your part.

You’ve always heard that the best way to save on groceries is coupons, coupons, coupons. While you can save a ton of money on groceries using coupons, the fact of the matter is that most of us don’t have the time or inclination to filter through newspapers looking for them. Once you do find something that you purchase on a regular basis, you have to clip the coupon out with scissors and store it in a bag of some kind to put in your purse. Then there are printable coupons that you can get online, but getting these usually means that you have to give up your e-mail address and other information, which can be risky. Unless you have a lot of time on your hands, stick to other, less time consuming methods of saving money.

If you see something that you buy often go on sale, stock up on it right then and there. Don’t wait, because as soon as the sale is over, the price will go right back up to where it was and sometimes even higher. This helps the store pay for the cost of the sale and while small grocery stores are guilty, big box stores are the worst at this. The bad thing is, most consumers don’t even notice that the price has gone past what it was before the sale.

Whatever you do, don’t shop when you don’t feel good. This includes when you’re hungry, stressed, tired, or anything else. Shopping when you’re hungry usually means that you will want a box or can of everything in the store, but this is never economically feasible and you’ll end up purchasing much more than you initially intended to. Shopping when you’re in a hurry also leads to bad purchase decisions.

Don’t forget that you don’t have to have meat at every meal. It’s ingrained into American culture that meat is an absolute necessity and while it is important, you don’t have to eat it at every meal or even every day. Vegetarian recipes are great when you don’t feel like eating anything heavy and they can be quite refreshing after spending so many years having meat every day. Forego the meat once or twice just to try it out and you may be pleasantly surprised.
