Espresso, like any other variant of coffee, originates from the hillsides of Ethiopia. Later it became very popular in the Arabian Gulf. It was the Arabs who brought coffee to Europe through trade. It all started in the year 1918, when Alfanso Bialetti started manufacturing metal household goods. The actual idea of stove top espresso makers came to his mind when he observed a sealed boiler type washing machine to wash clothes. It had a small central pipe which would draw the liquid soap from the bottom and redistributed it over the clothes. Bailetti manipulated this idea to make a simple coffee maker.

Italy had a very rich source of aluminum and Bailetti used it to invent the stovetop coffee maker. After making various prototypes, it was only in the year 1933 that the first stove top espresso maker came into the market. By then, all the technical problems were resolved. The unique design and eight-sided shape was based on a silver coffee service, famous at that time in rich Italian residences.

The combination of modern technology with the traditional Italian artistry has made the stove top coffee maker very popular, also because it was a simple solution to a rich cup of coffee. In the beginning, the annual sales of the equipment were 10,000 units. The basic purpose of the Bialette coffee maker was to let people take the pleasure of a rich espresso similar to the ones from the coffee bar in the comfort of their home.

Renato Bialetti realized the prospects of the stovetop espresso maker and initiated a major nationwide promotion campaign. This increased the sales and production levels were raised to around 1,000 units every day. It became the market leader in Italy. Not only did this coffee maker produce “espresso type” of coffee, which the Italians liked very much, it also made it much faster than its competitors.

The stovetop espresso coffee maker had become customary in Italy and many competitors entered the market by developing similar style coffee machines. Renato then decided to give his fathers invention a unique and distinct logo of – A little man with a moustache. From that day onwards until today all of Bialetti products bear this logo as the symbol of originality.
