If you are a grill fanatic, you’ve almost certainly read about the Big Green Egg cooker. It is a ceramic grill which you can use as a barbeque grill, smoker and a brick oven. It’s so adaptable you’re able to create anything from hamburgers and steaks and other traditional barbeque grill foods to desserts, breads as well as pizza.

Eggheads can’t live without the Big Green Egg, but you may be asking yourself what makes the Egg (as it’s fondly referred to as) different from other grills.

Probably the biggest difference is the overall look of the grill. The Big Green Egg is well, green and in the shape of an egg. While I cannot say exactly why it is green, I can point out that the egg shape appeared to be created (purposely) to offer the power to control and retain the heat within the grill much better than other grills.

The next largest distinction is the material. Instead of being made using metal, the Big Green Egg has thick ceramic walls. Ceramic is a lot more durable compared to other materials, so the Egg will last longer than other bbq grills, it can be cooked on year long (even with very cold temps). It’s also safer than other grills, particularly if there are little ones running around, since the ceramic material stays cooler than regular metal grills and because you always cook with the lid down, so you won’t have to be concerned with flare-ups.

There are numerous other differences however certainly one of my favorite features is the fan club the Big Green Egg has. There are Egg fans and events all over the united states, and Eggheads are excited to share their stories, tips and recipes at gatherings and also on the Egghead forum. I can’t think of any other barbeque grill that has such a following.

Now, the Egg does have a few disadvantages in comparison with other barbecue grills. For example, it is not a cheap grill. You can expect to pay approximately $700 to get a large Big Green Egg. Also, you will want to use lump wood charcoal, which is not always easy to find and is usually a bit more pricey when compared with standard charcoal briquettes. The Big Green Egg also has a smaller cooking surface area when compared with many gas grills, which means you will need to have a backup bbq grill if you are grilling for many people.

However, the versatility of the Big Green Egg, the ability to grill, smoke or bake with your Egg, as well as the awesome results you will get (the Egg can be quite forgiving, even for newbie cooks) are worthy of the cost. If you’re a barbecue enthusiast and you do a lot of smoking in addition to barbecuing you will really enjoy the quality and the results you get when cooking on the Big Green Egg.
