So many architects today love designing super modern homes. And with a modern home comes a contemporary kitchen with it’s smooth and sleek look. It’s actually wonderful to see how kitchens evolve with home design.

What does a modern kitchen look like today?

Less is more. That’s the new slogan. The less clutter you have in the kitchen the more space you have. Yes and it’s space they want to create. We all know that a plain old stitched together kitchen is uninviting. We have our dishwasher sticking out like a sore thumb and our fridge takes up an entire one wall. On top of this, your work space is virtually non existent. They say this is why we are not productive in the kitchen and see it only as a dreary place to throw together a quick meal. Hence the minimalistic kitchen was born!

The furniture and storage units which compliments this type of kitchen, is also designed with smooth surfaces in wood or in stainless steel. No external handles will protrude and the doors will be accessed with push and release mechanisms.

Color does not really feature a lot in this type of kitchen. Because there are virtually no objects on the surfaces, you don’t really need to worry about color other than cabinets and storage units. If you do need some color, have a vase with long stemmed flowers which you can place somewhere as a focal point.

A smooth and sleek kitchen also has to have ultra modern lighting. You could accentuate the entire room by installing lighting in different shades of pastels. Here your lighting would be recessed and no wall lamps or structures can protrude. Take care to have a bright light on the surfaces used most for food preparation.

Designs around floors have also taken a huge jump in the 21st century. Now it is essential to have a linear floor design as well. Some even use steel sheeting combined with wood and ceramic to give a textured look on the floor but keeping it one-dimensional at all times. To get this type of look in a small kitchen you might want to break down a wall that separates the kitchen with another room. Here you can create a spacious flow that will extend into say the dinning room or lounge area.

A contemporary kitchen is not doubt the way forward as it is also low maintenance and totally practical – together with and an atmosphere of opulence, elegance and intelligence.
