If you are steak-lover then you know just how you like it prepared. While there are those who prefer their steak rare others prefer theirs well done. There’s always the compromise of medium rare, which isn’t much of a compromise in my opinion. Rare steak is usually very pink and still pretty raw. If it is medium rare the steak will have a fully red color inside usually cooked at about 130 F. Well done steaks are cooked at about 160 F making the meat appear gray-brown throughout. Sometimes it looks slightly charred but it helps reduce people’s concerns about disease. Shorter cooking times retain more juice, and longer steak cooking times give you a drier tougher meat.

The three ways of cooking a steak that we’ll focus on include: grill, fry and oven roasting. First, you might consider getting a 1-inch thick steak. Anything thicker than this makes it difficult to gauge doneness. It is best to season the meat before actually cooking. It doesn’t matter which cooking style you choose. Just start by sprinkling a good amount of salt and pepper over the meat. You can even rub crushed garlic clove all over the beef for flavor.

The first cooking option for your steak is to grill it. Most meat-lovers seem to really enjoy this. The barbecue needs to be really hot though. Try pouring a little bit of olive oil on a small brush or a paper towel, and rub down the grill slate before laying down your steak. Once your steak is on the grill reduce the heat to about medium and make sure to keep the lid down. After about 5 minutes turn the steak over, and let it cook for about another 5 minutes on the other side.

Using the second steak cooking method basically involves tossing your beef into a frying pan. Turn your stove on medium heat and warm up a teaspoon of oil for a minute. Lay your steak in the pan but be sure to turn on the stovetop fan as well as keep the pan covered. If you’re cooking a 1-inch thick steak then you should let it cook for about four minutes on each side depending on how you prefer it cooked.

The last method, which is most often used by restaurants, requires just a couple of steps. When you are oven roasting your steak the oven should be preheated to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. A heavy frying pan that is oven-safe is used cook the meat in. Turn the element on high heat and warm up your skillet until it is piping hot. Place a teaspoon of oil in the pan and let it heat up. Using tongs gently put the steak in the pan and sear for a minute and a half on each side. By doing this you can lock in the juices. Next, place the pan in the oven to finish cooking and roast the beef for between six and nine minutes. Choose which method works best for you and enjoy your delicious steak.
