Why Choose Ceramic Knives Over Traditional Knives?

Many people have the misconception that when it comes to quality knives, your choices are limited to traditional metal knives. While there are some excellent metal knives available, ceramic knives offer some distinctive benefits over traditional knives that may just change your mind about your options. Before looking at the positive aspects, it may be helpful to first address some of the negatives associated with ceramic knives.

Con 1 – Ceramic Knives Need to Be Handled with Care

Ceramic compounds are fare more brittle than metal compounds. They are therefore more susceptible to chips and breaks. You cannot use a ceramic knife to chop frozen foods, bones or materials that are particularly hard. Ceramic blades are sharpened to razor-thin edges and this is partly what makes them so sharp. However, because the blade edge is so thin, it is more susceptible to chips if not handled with care. Sometimes chips can be repaired by professional sharpening, depending on where the blade has been damaged.

Con 2 – Ceramic Knives Carry the Perception of Being Expensive

If you look at a range of top-quality knives, both traditional and ceramic, you will find that there isn’t much difference in price. The reason most people have the perception that ceramic knives are expensive is because there are no cheap ceramic knives, whereas there are many cheap brands of metal knives. Almost all ceramic knives are manufactured according to very high specifications and the result is that they are a more expensive product. But compared with similar quality metal knives, they are not really overpriced.

Con 3 – Ceramic Knives Are Less Versatile

Because ceramic knives are only suitable for slicing softer items, they are not really an all-purpose kitchen utensil. Some people prefer to have one knife that they can use for cutting a wide variety of items. However, in reality, chefs will use a variety of knives in the kitchen. When you get familiar with using different knives, you will not mind having to wash more than one at the end of the day.

Benefit 1 – Unbeatable Sharpness Which Lasts a Lifetime

This is possibly one of the greatest attractions of ceramic knives. Ceramic is an exceptionally hard material which some say is second only to diamonds. Once a ceramic knife is properly sharpened, it does not get blunt or dull over time as a traditional knife would. Most manufacturers are so confident in the blade’s ability to retain its sharpness that their ceramic knives come with guarantees which include free sharpening for life.

Benefit 2 – Easier to Clean and More Sanitary Ceramic compounds used to make knives are incredibly dense. Because it is not very porous, dirt, bacteria and other substances do not easily stick to the blade. Cleaning simply involves rinsing the knife in clean water. Compared to how you may have to scrub metal knives, this can save you much effort in the kitchen. For this reason, ceramic knives are therefore considered to be much more hygienic.

Benefit 3 – No Transfer of Flavors Between Food Items

Most people who are used to using traditional metal knives will know that after cutting food substances with strong odors such as chillies or garlic, you need to properly wash the knife before moving on to slice another food item. If you don’t, you may transfer some of the flavor from one item on to the next and this could affect the outcome of your meal. This is particularly important if you are preparing more than one course or dish at a time. With ceramic knives, the high density of the ceramic compound does not allow substances to linger or get trapped in it because it is not very porous. A simple rinse in clean running water and you can use the ceramic knife without transferring any odors.

Benefit 4 – Lightweight and Easy to Use

Ceramic is approximately half the weight of traditional metal compounds used to manufacture knives. This makes for a lightweight knife that is easy to handle. Because the blade is so sharp, it makes food preparation effortless. After trying a ceramic knife, many people won’t use anything else.

Benefit 5 – No Risk of Rust

Unlike metal compounds, ceramic is not susceptible to rust. It is therefore more durable; many people believe this makes ceramic knives well worth the expense. Having a knife that will last a lifetime is good value in most people’s books.
